Step Into History: Discover the New Story Walk at the Hugh Torance House and Store
The Story Walk brings history to life through HEARTS, with each letter representing a meaningful, place-based connection to the Hugh Torance House and Store.
We are thrilled to share the latest milestone in our mission to preserve, connect, and share our local history. At our recent "HEARTS 250: Forging Our Freedom" event, the HEARTS Collaborative officially unveiled our newest outdoor feature: the Story Walk.
This immersive, self-guided experience invites visitors to engage with the Hugh Torance House and Store in an entirely new way. More than just a path, the Story Walk serves as a narrative journey that brings our site’s rich history, vibrant ecology, and future aspirations to life.
The Story Behind HEARTS
The Story Walk is designed around the very principles that define our collaborative. Each letter of "HEARTS" connects our visitors to the unique story of the Hugh Torance House and Store:
H for History: Discover the legacy of Hugh Torance and the evolution of the House that stands as a witness to our local heritage.
E for Ecology: Connect with the natural beauty surrounding the site, featuring native plants like PawPaws and Spicebush that anchor us to the land.
A for Arts: We celebrate local art—past and present—by keeping traditional crafts alive while welcoming new creative expressions to the property.
R for Reunion: Perhaps our most profound effort, the Reunion Project seeks to honor and learn about those enslaved at this site. Through extensive research, we have identified 143 individuals formerly enslaved at the Torrance plantation, whose names are now displayed in Cedar Grove, ensuring their stories are never forgotten.
T for Trails: Look forward to the future with the "Kitchen Trail," a thoughtfully designed path currently in development that will lead visitors from the House and Store to the foundational remains of the original kitchen.
S for Store: Representing a sustainable future for historic preservation, the Store remains a hub for tours, events, and the sharing of our history as the oldest standing mercantile establishment in North Carolina.
A Community Achievement
The launch of the Story Walk served as a 2026 milestone for the HEARTS Collaborative. We are deeply grateful to the Lake Norman Chamber’s Leadership Class of 2026, whose dedication and partnership were instrumental in bringing this vision to fruition. It was an honor to collaborate with such an impactful team.
