Battle of Ramsour’s Mill Commemoration & We

  • Christian Reinhardt Cabin Jeb Seagle Drive Lincolnton, NC, 28092 United States (map)

A Revolutionary War battle that was fought on June 20, 1780, on a site that today is nestled between a high and elementary school is not told in most history books. Many believe that the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill led to the unraveling of British strategy in the Carolinas. This battle, which was the first one won by Patriots after the fall of Charleston, was fought in some instances by neighbor against neighbor and sometimes brother against brother. The Battle left at least 100 dead and 200 wounded. Because the men on both sides had no uniforms, it was not known who was a Patriot or who was a Loyalist. Many were buried on the battle site in a mass grave.

A commemoration of the soldiers buried in the mass grave will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m. Bring a chair and join the Catawba Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Jacob Forney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and guests for the annual wreath laying at the mass grave.

Additionally, the annual Battle of Ramsour’s Mill Living History Weekend will be held on June 21 and 22 and will feature an encampment, demonstrations, vendors, hearth cooking demonstrations by the Lincoln County Hearth Cooks and battlefield tours.
