“HEARTS Let Freedom Spring” Highlights & the Creatures of the Springs Art Contest Winners!

HEARTS Collaborative’s first annual Creatures of the Spring Community Art Exhibit and Contest on May 24, 2025 was a huge success. The art show was held in conjunction with the May ‘25 HEARTS Happening entitled, “Let Freedom Spring,” marking the 250th anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. It all took place at Pioneer Springs Community School, near the location of Freedom Spring, the legendary birthplace of that document.

HEARTS Junion 25: Revolutionary Descent

Join us for an exploration of local history through the lens of genealogy and an afternoon of live music, visual art, dance, poetry, and nature. It all happens Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 2:00-5:00 at Huntersville’s historic Cedar Grove. Junion is an annual HEARTS Happening sharing genealogical connections from the HEARTS Reunion Project, featuring Andre’ Kearns, co-Chair of HEARTS Reunion Project, and descendant of Charlotte Kerns, formerly enslaved at Cedar Grove.

The 4th anniversary of HEARTS’ inaugural event features award-winning artists, poets, dance, and music, intertwined with history and nature at historic Cedar Grove. HEARTS, (history, ecology, arts, reunion, trails, store) presents “HEARTSongs ‘25: Poetry of Freedom,” a celebration of poetry past and present with a local twist. It all takes place at Huntersville’s historic Cedar Grove and Hugh Torance House and Store on Saturday, February 22, from 2:00-5:00. This event is free to the community with donations greatly appreciated. Limited tickets available!

HEARTSongs ‘25: Poetry of Freedom

2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Mecklenburg County’s declaration of independence from Great Britain, through the document known fondly as the Meck Dec. This milestone event is commemorated on our state flag, which bears the date May 20, 1775. To recognize this important year in American history, this year’s HEARTS events share connections to America’s earliest years, weaving the threads of freedom from the 18th century to the present.
